With the trend of large-scale mill, oil temperature control is of great significance to the stable operation of mill. This paper introduces the characteristics and selection principles of several common coolers, so as to provide certain reference for designers to select appropriate cooling scheme, so as to improve the stability of mill operation.


1) Tube cooler

The tubular cooler has the advantages of simple structure, durability, low cost, wide use of materials, convenient cleaning, large operation flexibility and strong adaptability. However, when the calcium and magnesium ions in the cooling water with high hardness enter the cooler, there will be scaling in the pipes and shell, which will affect the use of the cooler, resulting in large economic losses.

2) Plate cooler

Compared with tube cooler, plate cooler is compact in structure, small in volume and less in floor area due to the thin and closely arranged heat transfer plates, and the pressure ripple on the plate surface greatly increases the effective heat exchange area. Moreover, the plate cooler is easy to assemble. When the heat exchanger area is increased, only more plates need to be installed, and the direction of inlet and outlet does not need to be changed.

From the point of view of the water temperature and hardness of the plate type cooler, it is better than that of the water temperature and hardness of the cooling tube. The main disadvantage of plate cooler is leakage. In the case of large flow rate and high viscosity, the plate type cooler with small resistance should be selected with single flow structure.

3) Air cooled cooler

Compared with the water-cooled radiator, due to no more use of cooling water and no cooling water consumption, the heat transfer efficiency will not be affected by the water quality, which avoids the disadvantages of scale and freezing in the water cooling system, and also avoids the heat exchange when the cooling water passes through the inner and outer sides of the metal wall. Therefore, the air cooler has the advantages of small investment, easy maintenance and safe operation. When the large mill works in hot, dry and water deficient area, air-cooled cooler is a better choice.

However, in the case of high viscosity, large flow rate, high pressure loss and high heat transfer power, the key component of air cooler - finned tube has limited pressure resistance, and its performance directly affects the performance and use of air cooler. In practical application, multiple parallel connection is required. In addition, the power consumption, noise and floor area are large, and the cooling is greatly affected by climate change.

To sum up, the cooler should be safe and reliable, with enough heat dissipation area, small pressure loss, high heat dissipation efficiency, small and light volume, etc. Then the type of cooler should be selected according to the application situation and working environment, such as whether there is cooling water source, water quality and ambient temperature. Large mill lubrication system needs high heat exchange power, water as cooling medium has its heat capacity, so water cooling is a conventional and effective scheme. But in order to save water, air cooling can also be used.
