Several mineral processing methods of Bentonite

Bentonite is a kind of clay rock with montmorillonite as the main mineral composition. It often contains a small amount of illite, kaolinite, zeolite, feldspar and calcite. It is widely used in metallurgy, casting, oil drilling, chemical engineering, construction, soil improvement, environmental protection, paper-making and rubber industry. In this paper, the mineral processing method is introduced in detail.


There are three main mineral processing methods for bentonite: hand separation, wind separation and water separation.

1. In general, the waste rock will be selected by hand. According to the user's requirements, some mines mine in different sections and layers, stack them separately and process them separately. Manual processing procedures are generally as follows: raw ore → crushing → drying → grinding → packaging.

2. The principle process of air separation is: raw ore → drying → grinding → grading → packaging.

3. The hydrometallurgical beneficiation process is that the ore with particle size less than 5mm is stirred to make pulp with concentration of 25%, which is separated in hydraulic separator. Grit is used as ceramic raw material and brick making binder. Overflow is further separated by centrifuge, and about 45% of montmorillonite is separated. Drying at 105 ℃, the particle size of the product is 5um, almost all montmorillonite.

Another method is metaphosphate method. The ore grade is 60%. Firstly, the bentonite is made into slurry with liquid-solid ratio of 1.5 ~ 2, and then the slurry is put into the mixer for metering and mixing. At the same time, sodium hexametaphosphate is added with the dosage of 0.5% of the weight of bentonite. In order to make the bentonite settle rapidly, the concentration of metaphosphate solution should not be too thick. The mixed pulp enters the precipitator for sedimentation, the grit is the impurity, and the suspended solids are further separated, purified, dried and packed.

In order to obtain high-purity montmorillonite concentrate, the final product grade can reach more than 90%, which can be used in porcelain, food, medicine, papermaking, chemical industry and so on. The pulp can not be mixed with metaphosphate for a long time, otherwise the viscosity of pulp will be increased, and the mixing time is usually less than 5. In addition, dry ores cannot be directly mixed with reagents.

At present, most mineral processing plants at home and abroad use dry method to separate bentonite, while a few abroad use wet method or combined method.
